Self-defense singles might “kick-start” romances at Kim Soo Karate

On Saturday, Dec 21, Kim Soo Karate teamed up withMillionaire Matchmaker Amber Neal to sponsor a unique way to help about 36 young singles learn important self-defense skills while exercising and meeting new friends in a safe environment.

According to Ms. Neal, part of the concern is a fear of those who try on-line dating. What happens if the person you agreed to meet turns out to be psychopath or serial killer?

The group that gathered at the Kim Soo Karate studio at 1740 Jacqueline Street reflected Houston’s ethnic and professional diversity, ranging from a first experience with Martial Arts to a Tae Kwan Do instructor. Of all the options for the first course, drills on resisting gun attacks was the favorite.

Kim Chiang, owner of the studio, lead the sample class beginning with traditional Korean oaths to maintain discipline and respect and to refrain from violent behavior. Then on to warm ups, falling drills, balance, kicking cardboards held by partners, and shouts to focus energy and respiration,

As a simple example, the students learned how to resist an unarmed choker.

Finally, Kim Chiang distributed toy wooden guns to the group and each took turns being the would-be aggressor and the potential victim. He showed different approaches depending if the gun was pointed to the back of the head or the front, and alternative followup moves for overpowering and disarming the attacker.

As an unexpected treat, Kim Soo, Chiang’s’ father and the founder of the studio made an unplanned visit. He had recently returned from a 6 month teaching tour in Korea. Father and Son treated the group to an expert demonstration of self-defense tactics.

It’s still too early to tell how many will follow up with a longer course or how many romances were sparked, but the entire group expressed a great deal of satisfaction with the experience, so similar self-defense mixers are bound to become a popular option for first dates.

The Full Manti: FakeInternetGirlfriend.com Aired 2/20/2013

Houston weather, traffic, news | FOX 26 | MyFoxHouston Posted: Feb 20, 2013 9:07 PM CST Updated: Feb 20, 2013 9:08 PM CST By Ned Hibberd, Reporter – bio HOUSTON (FOX 26) – You’ve heard of long-distance relationships? Now a website is offering a relationship that’s a “long distance” from the truth. For $250 a month, fakeinternetgirlfriend.com offers to provide men with the electronic illusion of a significant other. She will text you, send you love notes on Facebook and even leave voicemail messages. And unlike Notre Dame football player Manti Te’o, you will rest assured she doesn’t really exist. Because you’re paying for phony. In fact, you might consider this website, “The Full Manti.” Houston matchmaker Amber Neal understands the appeal. “Image is everything. Perception is reality,” Neal said. “And it is a social pressure that we have to have the successful career. Have the successful relationship.” But Neal believes those who try to fake it will eventually be found out. Besides, ladies who want equal opportunity won’t find it here. There is no fakeinternetboyfriend.com. At least…not yet. Read more: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/story/21292179/the-full-manti-fakeinternetgirlfriendcom#ixzz2LVWMFrNX

Houston’s bars are lively any weekend with countless parties featuring local and nationally known entertainers. But with the NBA all-star game in town, bar-hoppers enjoy the additional challenge of sorting out rumors of when and whether which current or former all-star might appear at which bar, and how soon or late one must arrive to get a seat before a mystery VIP pulls up in a limousine. For most, the major factor was where good friends, great food, and original decor unite for a fun evening. In my case, it was my first visit to the Addix, known as Houston’s premier sports bar and grill at 33 Waugh Dr.in the heart of Houston’s popular Washington corridor. The party was coordinated and hosted by Houston Social Source and Matchmaker Amber Rountree-Neal, co-sponsored by a half-dozen local firms.

The Addix, about a block north of Washington Ave, has a home style decor in its 3 guest areas, an outer terrace, center, and inner rooms, with an exotic flare, using glowing artificial torches for light and heat on the terrace (appreciated in the unusually chilly air) and glowing heat lamps in the central area with a bar, tables, and a photo booth. The main inner bar includes the stage, dancing floor and lounge chairs. The different zones facilitate different sorts of simultaneous socializing. A half-dozen comedians and rappers livened up the crowd. Most of the guests were young professionals, comfortable paying the $25 cover charge for a relaxing time with a touch of glamor, mingling with musicians, local comedians, models , and charming waitresses. Amids the blaring music and frequent checks of i-phones, the rumors circulated that a mystery VIP would arrive between 10 and 11:00 PM. Some said it might be Shaquile O’Neil. Others named a few well-known comedians. Several television cameras, freelance photographers, and enthusiastic amateurs began gathering on the outer terrace, while the others took turns capturing the atmosphere on video. Eventually a long black limousine arrived and a local director positioned his crew. The VIPs were the popular Indie group Alazae who delivered an electrifying performance of “Code Red.” shortly after 1:00 AM, and the tireless party-goers still needed to be urged to leave when the bar closed at 2.

HOUSTON (FOX 26) -When it comes to matters of the heart, your nose knows. That’s the theory, anyhow, behind Houston’s newest dating game: the pheromone party.Pheromones are chemical transmitters that are thought to signal sexual attraction in the animal kingdom.”Chemistry is everything. It really matters,” said matchmaker Amber Neal, who consulted on the party, which was held at Nouveau Antique Art Bar in Midtown.Participants were instructed to sleep in one of their t-shirts for three consecutive nights.”They put them in a Ziploc bag and they freeze them during the day,” explained Jennifer Huthmacher, with party organizer Houston Social Source. “And when they get home they can put them in the dryer to warm them up and put them on before bed again.”At the party, the undergarments were all sampled – sniffed, really – by singles of the opposite sex.Emily, one of the eligible bachelorettes, said one sample emitted “a nice comfortable smell. It’s not overpowering. It just smells like something you can snuggle up with.” “This one really doesn’t do for me,” said Brian, after taking a deep whiff. “Something about that; I don’t know if it’s a turnoff but it doesn’t smell, I’d say, sweet.” Pheromones do not emit a detectable scent. But they are believed to trigger a tingle, deep in the animal brain. “To me, I think it’s fantastic,” said a woman named Liane. “Because this is what we’ve been doing for thousands upon thousands of years.” According to Houston Social Source pheromones assisted in four “love connections,” plus four more matches that were unrelated to the undershirts.

On Friday evening Feb 8 at the Nouveau Antique Art Bar in Midtown on Main Street, dozens of adventurous singles arrived with slept-in t-shirts in plastic bags to try sniffing their way to a new date. This was the second Pheromone Party sponsored by Houston Social Source and Matchmaker Amber Roundtree-Neal. Just as with the first event at the same location Oct 5 2012, participants were asked to sleep in the same t-shirt for 3 nights and freeze it while not being worn. The idea is to infuse pheromones into the garment. Participants registered in advance, and bags were assigned a number (blue for men, pink for women) on arrival. The bags were arranged on separate tables, and at a signal from the hostess, everyone took turns sniffing bags brought by members of the opposite sex. In theory, if pheromones on the t-shirts of the biologically attractive potential mates would stimulate a euphoric response. If so, the sniffer was photographed holding up the bag. The photos were then played on a screen and everyone could see who liked his or her number. From that point, they were free to mingle, knowing who liked their t-shirt.

Some of the participants attended the first party, but everyone seemed to enjoy the experience, judging from the room full of lively conversations after the display. But if any pheromone-stimulated coupling was in the offing, the party goers were discrete about it, at least to the reporters and organizers (see video clip of interview. Perhaps it was just a fun way to break the ice at a party. Perhaps everyone took a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach to the event. Whatever did or did not happen afterwards, participants seemed eager to do it again…

Couples at the first Touch and Taste workshop try painting one another

On Saturday, May 5 the Zen Art Space in the Galleria Mall celebrated Cinco de Mayo by launching a new art workshop series for couples with Amber Neal, founder and CEO of Matchmaker Enterprises. Amber reviewed more than a decade of experience with matchmaking efforts with several earlier business ventures to an understanding of reasons why happy couples lose a sense of attraction and celebration and eventually separate. In the seemingly unrelated area of Zen art, painter Annie Peng, one of several art directors at the Zen Art Space, acquired a profound understanding of the ways in which painting, and particularly body art, can communicate emotion.

Amber and Annie soon developed a plan for couples seeking a better mutual understanding of their emotional needs by learning to paint their thoughts on one another. The program includes one-on-one counseling sessions, with some time for men and women separately, then a simple first effort at painting a basic thought on the partner’s neck, arm, or hand. After the first work of art, the couples exchange roles as painter and “living canvas.” Even those with no art experience or talent can participate. Some participants paint only initials, a heart, or a simple message. But they soon find new avenues of expression in seeing their work on their partners.

Amber Rountree-Neal of Matchmaker Enterprises and Jennifer Hutchmaker of Houston Social Source planed this first Pheromone party in Houston

When Amber waived her bottle of pheromone-enhanced perfume under my nose, I almost forgot my job and why I was upstairs in the Prohibition Craft of Cocktails bar in the Galleria that Friday night. Amber Roundtree-Neal of Matchmaker Enterprises teamed up with Jennifer Huthmacher of Houston Social Source to organize Houston’s very first “pheromone party,” the latest fad in matchmaking mixers gathering fans on both coasts. My job was to concentrate on getting good photos and to a coherent story when it was over.

Pheromones are natural scented body fluids, usually undetected, that have an impact on the emotions. According to the Health Gurua large part of the inexplicable feeling of falling in love can be attributed to the presence of mutually attractive pheromones. The scents occur with other natural bodily fluids, so they are not usually highly concentrated or noticeable. But most pheromones are diluted and cleaned away when we wash our clothes.

The concept of a pheromone party is to give everyone a chance to sniff the pheromones of the guests discretely and anonymously then agree to strike up a conversation with someone who knows that something about them turns them on. So, the plan is for everyone to sleep in the same t-shirt for three nights before the event. The t-shirt is then placed in a zip-lock bag and frozen. The night of the party, everyone brings his or her thawed sealed bag to the event. The bags are then numbered so that only the host and the owner knows whose shirt it contains. Next, during the mixer, each person takes a whiff of all the bags brought by those of the sex he or she is trying to attract. A picture is taken with the person holding up any bag of interest. The photos are then projected or posted for all to see. In this case, I brought my printer along so anyone who had discovered a new love would have a souvenir of the moment. So while guests arrived most in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s along with a few seniors, Amber numbered their bags, and the mixing and mingling took its course. I got busy capturing expressions, body language, and of course, as many candid shots of a few of Houston’s amazing young singles, (not to mention Amber). But being the photographer at a pheromone party is a little like being the designated driver at wine-and-cheese party. That said, my non-expert opinion is that pheromones appear to be powerful aphrodisiacs, but its a bit early to go into detail. Amber’s agenda called for an early morning departure for New York, but now that Houston has gotten a whiff of this adventurous new way to “break the ice,” Amber says she has already started working on another party in September. Stay tuned.

Pheromone party at Nouveau Antique Art Bar in Houston Oct 5 2012 Hostess explains pheromones and gives party instructions

On Friday October 5, 2012, Houston Social Source hosted its first “pheromone party” at the Nouveau Antique Art Bar in at 2913 Main in Midtown with co-host matchmaker Amber Rountree Neal.

At least 100 adventurous participants (almost equal numbers of males and females) prepared for the party by sleeping in a t-shirt at least three nights in a row. Each sealed the shirt in a zip-lock bag, and brought it to the party to register with a color-coded number known only to the host and the participant, blue for males, pink for females. Guests mingled for about an hour while the bags were arranged and sorted on two tables, for ages 40 and under and over 40.

Once all was in place, the hostess briefly explained how pheromones work (see article in the journal of Athena Institute), and instructed everyone to go to the appropriate table and sniff all the bags of the appropriate gender. Although pheromones are odorless, they are natures aphrodisiacs, producing a euphoric sense in “naturally” good mates. If the sniffer enjoyed the reaction, he went to the designated photographer and had a photo taken holding up the numbered bag. The photos were projected on a screen so everyone could see who was attracted to what number. In case someone missed the photo, the numbers were announced at the microphone (see video clip). If one spotted someone holding his or her number, all agreed it gave permission to start a conversation. On the other hand, some might just be left “holding the bag.”

As the winner of the sexy lingerie door prize for highest heels strutted across the bar I knew I should have reviewed my low-light photography notes. Even so, I managed a few good shots as she paraded back up as volunteers helped her to the floor. Then came the prizes for men, as I caught a runner up for the largest shoe. I managed to qualify for being single longest, winning a $25 gift certificate from Cookie Seduction: not a bad prize, judging from the chocolate samples Master chef Mari Arrington offered me a few minutes earlier at her table just inside the Swagger Bar at 3839 Southeast Freeway. Then came the main event: the first speed dating mixer at the Swagger Bar. It was Friday October 19, and the evening was still young. Having been away from the bar scene for awhile, and knowing more than most care to discuss about on-line dating, I had heard of many of the latest trends and pitfalls of each. But speed-dating sounded different.

Matchmaker Amber Roundtree-Neal explains advantages of Speed dating over Internet dating at Swagger Bar in Houston Oct 19 2012

For many, the bar scene can be daunting, since the conversations often start with a focused “game plan” by at least one of two strangers, so there is always relatively high risk on the one hand, and the truth about identities, lifestyle, income, or careers is often missing in action. On-line dating makes it possible to “meet” people in the safety and quiet of one’s own home, but it can also be difficult to know whether a profile is genuine, and if so, whether there is any attraction to the other person when time comes to meet in person. So Matchmaker Amber Rountree Neal sought a “middle way.” Enter, “speed dating.”

The basic idea of a “speed dating” event is for singles to agree to a five-minute “interview” respecting basic ground rules. All participants register in advance with the sponsoring group, so males and females are about equal in number. A half-dozen tables for 2 were set aside for the session. No names, addresses, phone numbers or business cards are to be exchanged. But questions that can open up a window on personality are fair game. One suggestion “Suppose you knew you had only 6 months to live. Where would you spend them and what would you do?” After five minutes, the emcee announced time to move on to the next interview. Everyone scored the conversation and noted “yes” or “no” for further contact. The ladies remained seated and the gentlemen moved to the next interview table. In little more than 45 minutes, everyone had talked with everyone and all the score sheets were turned in to the hostess for pairing. Meanwhile, guests were treated to a fantastic buffet, and a surprise glimpse at one of Houston’s newest entertainers, singer Amber Smoke Realistically, no system is fool-proof, so it’s important to know how to size up any new person. Here, modern technology can be helpful for those who understand how to use it. A co-sponsor of tonight’s event was Tayarisha Joyce author of “Scope Your Date.” The website, http://www.scopeyourdate.com, offers an e-book to be available November 2, 2012, with advice on free leads to check to see if your new contact has “issues” that merit caution (deadbeat parents, sex offender lists, and more). As Amber explained, with speed-dating participants actually see their new prospect, an advantage over Internet dating. On the other hand, five minutes is not too long if there is no “chemistry” and long enough to see if there is some initial interest. Of course, what happens next is up to each couple. Good friends Ayana Mack and L.C. October 26, 2012 Come check out the MatchMaker perform. Please call 281-964-7485 to get your tickets today!     My comedy buddy on the show with me!
